Philippines Mariveles Power Plant Project: Seawater Filtration System for 2x300MW Units

Time: | Read: 5

Project Background:

Located in Bataan Province, Luzon Island, the GNPower Mariveles Energy Center is a critical base-load power plant in the Philippines, featuring two 300MW subcritical coal-fired units. Situated on the coast, the plant utilizes seawater directly for circulating cooling water. The tropical maritime environment, characterized by high water temperatures and active biological growth, results in raw water containing significant amounts of shells, jellyfish, algae, and sediment. If these impurities enter the condenser, they cause tube plugging, reduced heat transfer efficiency, and even corrosion pitting, seriously threatening the full-load operation of the units.

Core Challenges:

  • Severe Corrosive Environment: Seawater’s high salinity and conductivity demand exceptional corrosion resistance from the filtration equipment materials.
  • Complex Marine Biofouling: Rapid biological growth in tropical waters requires filters to efficiently handle seasonal outbreaks of marine organisms like small jellyfish and plankton.
  • Ultra-High Flow Continuous Operation: With massive circulating water flow for 300MW units, the filtration system must perform fully automatic self-cleaning and blowdown without interrupting the main process.
  • Ease of International O&M: Located overseas, the project demands robust equipment with low failure rates and intuitive user interfaces for easy maintenance by local technicians.

Our Solution:

Tailored to the specific conditions of the Mariveles Power Plant, we provided multiple sets of large-diameter fully automatic self-cleaning filtration units:

  • Specialized Anti-Corrosion Selection: Wetted parts are made of Duplex 2205 stainless steel or carbon steel with rubber lining/Halar/Ceramic coatings. Fasteners utilize titanium alloys or super stainless steel, ensuring a design life of over 15 years in seawater.
  • Reinforced Rotary Brush/Suction Technology: Featuring corrosion-resistant wedge wire screens paired with a powerful rotary cleaning mechanism. When pressure sensors detect clogging, the system automatically activates the blowdown valve and drive motor, thoroughly removing marine organisms and sediment with minimal water loss.
  • Redundancy Design & Modular Installation: Multiple units operate in parallel, allowing for individual online maintenance without affecting the total circulating water inflow.
  • International Control System: Equipped with Siemens PLC smart control cabinets supporting bilingual (CH/EN) interfaces and Modbus TCP protocols for seamless integration into the plant’s Central Control Room (DCS) for digital remote monitoring.

Customer Value & Results:

Since the commissioning of the filtration system, it has successfully withstood multiple seasonal peaks of marine organisms. The heat transfer efficiency of the condensers has consistently remained within design parameters, significantly reducing the frequency and cost of manual tube cleaning. Unplanned shutdown risks have been effectively mitigated, ensuring stable power supply for the Luzon grid. As a key energy facility along the "Belt and Road," this project demonstrates the superior performance and high reliability of premium Chinese equipment in complex overseas environments.
