Shandong New Material Co.: PPS Phase I Special Material Filtration System Project

Time: | Read: 1

Project Background:

Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) is known as the "sixth largest engineering plastic" and is widely used in aerospace, automotive, and environmental filtration sectors. While constructing its PPS Phase I project, a Shandong-based new material company urgently required a precision filtration system capable of resisting extreme chemical corrosion and high temperatures while enabling automated slag discharge to ensure polymer purity and continuous production.

Core Challenges:

  • Extreme Corrosive Environment: The presence of large amounts of sodium chloride salts and strong polar solvents during PPS synthesis makes ordinary stainless steel highly susceptible to pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
  • High-Temperature Operation: The filtration process must be conducted at elevated temperatures to maintain material fluidity, placing high demands on the equipment's sealing structure and thermal stability.
  • High-Precision Desalination: Minute salt particles and impurities must be thoroughly removed from the polymer slurry, as any residue would compromise the mechanical and insulating properties of downstream products.

Our Solution:

Tailored to the specificities of PPS production, we provided a customized filtration system solution using special materials:

  • Application of Special Alloys: Core wetted parts are constructed from Hastelloy C276 or high-grade duplex stainless steel. These materials offer superior corrosion resistance in high-temperature chloride environments, significantly extending equipment life.
  • Fully Enclosed Automatic Discharge: Utilizing automated candle filters or precision plate filters, the system achieves fully enclosed operation. It supports automatic back-pulse discharge, reducing solvent evaporation and personnel exposure risks, in line with chemical safety and environmental regulations.
  • Enhanced Heating & Insulation: The system features high-performance jacket heating to ensure materials maintain a constant temperature throughout filtration, preventing clogging caused by precipitation or viscosity changes.
  • Customized Filter Elements: High-temperature resistant, high-compressive strength multi-layer composite metal meshes were selected to ensure stable filtration precision under complex working conditions.

Customer Value & Results:

Since the commissioning of the PPS Phase I special material filtration system, it has demonstrated excellent corrosion resistance and operational stability. The system has successfully achieved high-precision solid-liquid separation, with byproduct salt removal rates meeting expected targets, while significantly increasing throughput per batch via automated control. The client highly commended the application of special materials and the system's hermetic integrity. This success has laid a solid foundation for further cooperation in the upcoming Phase II project, helping the client maintain a leading position in the high-quality engineering plastics market.
